Drama at the Class A state wrestling dual tournament on Saturday.
After 14 matches in the Class A state dual tournament finals Pierre and Brandon Valley were tied at 33-33. In the case of a tie tournament officials determine a champion by who had the most pins in the match. The Governors had three pins to Brandon Valley’s two pins to earn a state title with a 34-33 win.
Brandon Valley jumped out to a 13-0 lead with wins from Jordon Oehme, Alex Mentzer and Trason Oehme. Lucas Chamberlain, Deegan Houska, Trey Lewis, Chance Carda, Gavin Stotts and Elijah Boutchee won the next six matches as the Governors jumped to a 30-13 lead. Brandon Valley got wins from Navarro Schunke, Brendon Oehme and Trevon Oehme to tie the dual at 30-30.
And then things got really interesting.
Pierre bumped up Alex Oedekoven, runner up (113) in the individual competition to (120). Oedekoven earned a 6-3 decision over Brandon Valley’s Landon Walker. In the final match, Brandon Valley’s Zander Nielsen, fourth at (126) in the individual competition, was unable to go because of injury. Brandon Valley reserve Aaron Tucker earned a 3-1 decision over Lincoln Schoenhard to tie the match.
Ironically enough Brandon Valley and Watertown tied 36-36 in the semi final dual with the Lynx advancing after having five pins to Watertown’s four.
Watertown earned third place with a 42-33 win over Sturgis.
Harrisburg claimed fifth place with a 42-24 win over Aberdeen Central.
