Thank you to those of you that attended the state youth tournament. This again was one of the largest we've had, very similar to last year. Thank you to all the volunteers and people that make this go. Thank you to all the coaches/boards throughout the state who help educate our clubs and families as they navigate the SD Youth Wrestling scene. Lastly thank you to the officials who came out and officiated.

Thanks for allowing two coaches in the corner and having chairs.   I thought that was a huge addition and greatly appreciated.

It was a great tournament. The experience was so much better being in the bigger venue. Once again the venue is so much more accommodating to fans and athletes. Having full mats for the older kids all weekend was so much better. Also the way they kept things rolling on Sunday was great. Wrestling was done almost 2 hours earlier compared to last year. Only 2 things that could use some attention are that Saturday was a long day. I had a wrestler in each session. The other is the kids were disappointed in the brackets for the champions. Why were they so small?  Not sure what the plan is for next year at the Arena in Sioux Falls is but a precedent was set this year. Anything less than what was experienced this year is ridiculous and absolutely unfair to the athletes and their families.

Saturday is going to be the long day, not just for you, but for the refs, my volunteers and the kids. We did "pod" wrestle, which saved us probably 2 hours, 1 hour in each session vs. mat wrestling on Saturday. That helped. Moving more to Friday adds volunteers on a school day/work day and other things, especially if we would start earlier or go later. The brackets were smaller this year as we did not have the horsepower to sticker brackets last year (that was not efficient) or write them out like prior years, with thousands of bouts. It's one thing to do those for a high school tournament with 14 boys and 12 girls brackets, but to do it all weekend for 175 brackets is a tall task to keep up. In the end, when the matches finally get saved at the table (after each of the placing matches) and with finishing 3 weight classes at a time, we could print them on demand, in color, on cardstock vs. plain paper. That reduced the bottle neck at awards to be more efficient. Some people may not like that, but with all of the other things to manage leading up to and during the tournament, that was a no brainer.

The only thing id like to see moving forward is challenge matches for 2nd. With having three regional champs on one side of the bracket, it can over load it. The venue was great and i appreciated the format compared to other state tournaments Ive attended.
