Why doesn't the ranking committee rank the top 12 wrestlers in each weight class regardless of region. Maybe people would see what a joke wrestling is in regards to getting the best wrestlers to the state tournament. Basketball, football, volleyball, etc. have all changed how teams get to the state tournament (or the dome). Wrestling continues in its old ways of getting to the state tournment. How long do we have to see region 3 wrestlers that should be ranked in the top 8-12, but can't because 4 wrestlers from the region are already ranked. For example, at 138 Vincent Lenz is not ranked but has beaten #7, #9, and #10. To get to state (which is suppose to be the top 16 in each weight class) he will have to beat #1 Keiser, #3 Holzbauer, #5 Kaul and/or #6 Shafer. Lenz and the other 4 are probably all worthy of the state podium stand and I guarantee they are all in the top 12, but at least one of them will have to stay home. Another example is at 190lbs. Knebel, Krownover, Eklund, and Negebauer are all ranked in the top 6 from Region 3. But even though Westendorf from KWLPG has beaten #8 Mentele from Howard twice including one pin, he will be left at home unless he can beat one or more of the top 6 mentioned above. Why do have weaker wrestlers from weaker regions going to state at the expense of the strenth of region 3. Have wrestling fans, coaches, and state officials not noticed that Winner, Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes, BonHomme, Parkston, Miller/Highmore, are all in the top 10 rankings and all in the same region. And do not forget that Wagner and Burke/Gregory have been wrestling powers for years. There are multiple ways of getting the best wrestlers to the state tournament. If anyone else thinks how wrestlers qualify for the state tournament needs changing (or at least moving teams into different regions) let the SDHSAA know your opinion.

(Because they only take 4 wrestlers from each Region this isn’t AAU anymore)

(Wrestling is an individual sport while the others you listed are team sports)

(Your way of thinking would have you take the top 4 teams in the reigon to state no mater how they place individually….If you placed 1st in the Region but didn’t make the top 4 team scores you stay home…….just like Basketball, Football, Volleyball etc.)

There are multiple ways of getting the best wrestlers to the state tournament. If anyone else thinks how wrestlers qualify for the state tournament needs changing (or at least moving teams into different regions)

(You brought up 3 weight classes there are 14)

Wonder what region scores most points for as long as I remember. Canton brings their whole team because their region is weak as hell…

wont change because 75 percent of teams are happy not to be in region 3

crazy how many weights all 4 from region 3 place

feel free to list the last 5 years scores by region at the state tournament

32 Man brackets at State would solve this. Could still finish the tournament in three days because of all the time wasted with the way they currently schedule it.

32 man brackets?  I think that making it to state should be an accomplishment, not nearly every person in the state goes.  If you are taking 8 kids per weight from each region, 42 kids in the entire Class B would NOT have made it to state in 2024.

Region 1 - 6 kids

Region 2 - 5 kids

Region 3 - 12 kids

Region 4 - 19 kids

I get a there are kids in Region 3 who are better than other kids who make it to state, but sending nearly every person in the state doesn't seem like the solution to me either.

I cannot believe I finally struck a nerve on the grappler.  Mr. "Reaper" I do not believe is getting my point."  The other sports are simply trying to get the best teams to the state tournament. Wrestling is not trying to get the best individuals to  the state tourney. I know that change is difficult, but I believe that I have a slight compromise. I understand that Region 3 does not have 5 or 6 of the best wrestlers in the state in each weight class so give me feed back on this idea. Instead of taking the top 4 from each weight class from each region, only guarantee the top 3 from each weight class qualify for state. That would leave 4 open spots in each weight class at state.. Take place winners 4 thru 6 from each each weight class and seed those 12 wrestlers. The highest 4 seeds would be state qualifiers 13-16. This way each region would get their best kids in from their strongest weight classes. We already seed the state tournament now, so seeding the 12 wrestlers that place 4 thru 6 at region should not be a problem.  I am simply tring to reward the best wrestlers in the state and make the best state tournament possible. I am interested in your feedback.

I also think that making it to state should be an accomplishment,  but when some kids make it with losing records over kids that would have placed top 8 at state based on what region their parents chose to live in, they are being let down by the system . It’s not an accomplishment if “Ben” has beat you every tournament you’ve faced him in but you make it to state because you have an easier region. You are not better than he is, he deserves to be there more than you do. If you go back over the years it’s consistently region 3 that is penalized, but not saying it’s the only region to have this happen. I want to see the best of the best kids going head to head. The best of the best kids are not wrestling in the state tournament. No one can disagree with that, and I wish something that could be done for those kids who deserve to be there.

I think if they put Miller Highmore in region 1, it would solve a lot of this issues here.

Or Bon Homme to Region 2.

I think frequently redrawing regions based on state tournament finishing to try to get points to be close would solve the problem… no reason there is a 300 plus point difference between top region and bottom region would be fairest.
Example

canton most team points region 1

winner gets second 2nd region 2

kimball 3rd gets region 3

Phillip gets 4th region 4

bon homme gets 5th they go region 1

CWL 6th they go region 2

so on down the line…

then keep the current top 4 at region system
