Quote from WrestleMma185 on April 5, 2025, 6:07 amI think 14u has a real talented contingent of kids from like 85-100 pounds. A lot of fairly talented kids that are just too small. Macyn Gardner is another one with a solid history.
sturgis is gonn have there handful with tough little guys. Couple more Nadig boys, tyce Dunn (went to heartland duals), and jaxson Avery
Hahns boy gonna be a tough big guy in that age groups.

Quote from cbds on April 5, 2025, 7:50 amDont forget about the 7th and 8th graders that went to high school state this last season who didn't wrestle at AAU state that would have been in the 14U division. There are some really talented young kids coming up who have already proven they can compete with the upper classman. This is just another reason there still needs to be two separate classes in SD. Everybody wants to talk about how to keep kids from quitting, but going to one class would only make more kids leave programs because they would never have a chance at going to a state tournament.
There have been comments made about making the state tournament more competitive and eliminating kids who have losing records by going to one class. All this is going to do is kill off the sport even more by taking more chances away. Should the NCAA D-1 tournament be doing the same thing then????? Check for yourself, but there were 14 college kids who qualified for the national tournament with a .500 or losing record.
We have to keep kids interested in this sport or we will lose them. It's by far in my opinion the hardest SD high school sport. Every kid that wrestled at AAU state probably has the same dream. To be a high school state champ or placer. Every other sport has multiple classes, the idea of just one class is insane. Not very many small schools have the same training opportunities as the big schools (facilities, training partners, multiple coaches, off-season training close to them, and so on). There is nothing better than seeing a kid from out in the middle of nowhere show up to high school state as their schools only representative knowing all the hard work they had to put in due to not having all the extra essentials that a big school would have. These are the kids we need to stay interested the most.
SD wrestling is only going to get better with all the off-season wrestling and training that is going on currently. How many more kids are traveling to camps, tournaments, and trainings now then 15 years ago.
So what if the state tournament has to be 3 days long. We don't need to be taking chances away from kids who are middle of the road who have goals to place at state. They are working hard for something that is very difficult. It's a wonderful life lesson they are being taught.

I agree there is a lot of great wrestlers that will be moving up into the high school ranks in the next couple years. I fully believe that the private clubs/academies whatever you want to call them have elevated the level of wrestling in our state. It’s too bad that it took so long for people to embrace them claiming it was going to ruin wrestling in the state. When Legends of Gold first opened they had to sue the activities association to stay open because they tried to shut it down. There is also a lot more kids traveling to out of state tournaments to compete against some of the best kids in the country. Many of them doing very well. We definitely should leave it with 2 classes. Gives kids more opportunities to compete. In my opinion kids are leaving the sport in middle school. Schools need to do a better job developing middle school kids who can’t quite compete at the varsity/jv level in 7th/8th grade. The parents also need to take advantage of the opportunities available to get their kids mat time. The 14u divisions at most of the AAU tournaments during the year have very low participation numbers. There was a couple schools that tried to host an open middle school tournament this past season. Both of them were canceled due to low registration numbers.

Quote from WrestleMma185 on April 5, 2025, 1:06 pmDo all school recognize the MS state tourney on their Ms season schedules? Due to the Ms system in some areas, the state tourney for those 6-8th graders is not recognized by the school, so kids have to be “on their own”. I know for newer kids this drags them away from wrestling.

The middle school state tournament is not a school sanctioned tournament. Luckily our school is willing to transport the kids and the coaches to the tournament so they are able to compete.

Quote from WrestleMma185 on April 5, 2025, 5:54 pmSure, that’s exactly what I was wondering. Our area can go, but right now they go without guarantee of a coach/ have to transport on their own.
