I absolutely love the passion you have for Vi and South Dakota girls wrestling. Vi’s performance at Rumble on the Red was incredible: going undefeated and winning the 130 lb title with a tough 5-4 finals decision definitely put her in strong contention for Wrestler of the Week. That said, saying “hands down” is tough because Rumble is an amazing meet with super deep fields overall — it’s famous for drawing state champions and nationally ranked in a lot of brackets. In Vi’s specific bracket, though, the competition was very solid, but I didn’t see any reigning state titles or current national rankings among the placers. Savannah Bell moving from honorable mention to #1 at 115 lbs in just 5 weeks is a very strong feat and absolutely worthy of recognition too, that kind of breakout doesn’t happen without serious work and big wins. I feel the committee does a pretty amazing job overall, and judging by how carefully they handle the rankings week to week, I’d say they have a very good idea of what’s out there both in-state and at big multi-state events like Rumble. These ranking have to be load of work and they are very fun to watch.
At the end of the day, both girls had monster weeks, and we’re lucky to root for talent like Vi and Savannah. Let’s keep celebrating all of them, the depth this season is something special!
