seems like there needs to be a fix to get best kids to state.
i think go down to 2 regions and take top 8 would be a start.

Quote from Sasquatch on February 25, 2025, 8:34 amI like the idea they were talking about on here earlier. Taking the top 3 from each region and then filling in the rest with the next best 4!
Example: Region 4 has a wrestler that won his Region and is seeded 10th. In that same weight class, Region 3 had a wrestler that lost the blood round, so 5th in his zRegion and yet not going, who would have been seaded about 7th.
It happens every year.

Quote from bottomtotop on February 25, 2025, 10:29 amMany will disagree with me but that’s what is great about region tournaments are the upsets especially in the blood round. Only take the top 3 and arbitrarily picking the next 4 completely takes that away.
Example is that 5th or unseeded wrestler that gets the upset win over a 2 or 3 seed in the blood round. If they go on to lose 3rd/4th place match and now they get their spot taken by the wrestler they upset is way more unjust than the higher seeded wrestler getting beat and not qualifying.

Quote from Travis on February 25, 2025, 5:07 pmI like the blood round matches also… just sad to see the best kids not making state. If they would redraw regions to keep them competitive and equal wouldn’t be a problem.. or 2 regions you would still have blood round would be to get into the 8th place matches…
again best kids should be at state.. track keeps kids times top 24 times from all year make it…
Crazy to think kid with 7 losses in region 3 doesn’t make it to state and there is a kid with a losing record from a different region making the tournament

You could have everyone in 1 bracket, but still award Class A and Class B team champions based on the top 6 team finishers from the A's and the top 6 team finishers from the B's

I think most of that goes away if you combine with As not to mention - A school wrestlers have advantages over B school counterparts. Biggest advantage I can think of is room with same size kids for wrestling partners.

This would for sure better justify a 3 day tournament. Great idea

Quote from lace em up on February 27, 2025, 10:13 amCan anyone explain why there is a bye at the Girls 152?
There were only three entrants in Region 1, they all qualified.
There were ten entrants in Region 4, six are sitting at home. Wasn't the 5th place match to be used for something like this, to fill the bracket?
Also at 185 and 235.

Quote from Armbar on February 27, 2025, 3:52 pmI'm not a fan of only taking 3 and letting seeding pick the last 4 to the state tournament. Since the state tournament's inception, Regions left a 5th guy out who would have easily beaten or sometimes beat another Regions 4th placer. But since we've eliminated districts, seeding the Region has become very significant for making it to state.
I'd much rather have a TRUE 4th PLACE match at Regions. I'm not sure how the Regions can not violate the 5 match rule with 16 man brackets so I wouldn't think a TRUE 4th PLACE match would be that big of deal.

Quote from Armbar on February 27, 2025, 4:44 pmThe "best kids at state" will never really be accomplished until we allow teams to enter JV kids in Regions. My buddy couldn't make the team in 1985 at 98. Was back-up to a kid who got 2nd. Could beat the guys up either as he was a just to light. There were weeks he'd win the first wrestle-off but then lose the next 2. Our team back then had 2 to 3 decent guys behind our varsity in most all the weights but the heaviest ones. We had a kid on JV that year that had qualified for state his FR year but couldn't make varsity his Jr. year.

however they can’t even fix the lopsided region problem

Quote from 3moves on March 2, 2025, 11:45 pmTake the top 32, it would get rid of some the ridiculous 3 to 5 time state championship we've had in B's. Hurd woldn't even have a championship if he wrestled in the A's.

So your saying Kaden Keiser, Ayson Rice, Kellyn March, and other multi time state champs from the Bs wouldn't be in the As? Logan Graf was in the Bs with Custer, then went to Stevens and won 2 more titles.

How about we appreciate these kids for making the tournament instead of calling them out. Maybe they were an alternate, maybe they wrestled at a different weight because a teammate was better, maybe they filled a hole where no one else wanted to be, maybe their teammate got hurt and could not wrestle regions, maybe they are younger vs. older kids, maybe they actually wrestle a tough schedule, maybe they were hurt for part of the year, maybe they turned it on at the end of the year, maybe they just came out to try it, maybe they had a positive record going in, maybe their region was not as good at that weight, maybe whatever. If we want to keep our numbers up for retention and keep kids in the sport and have something for them to work for, why even call it out. Most kids won't wrestle after high school and they might excel in other things. Let's be glad they show up and wrestle, especially in duals to actually have matches, and to have practice partners and be part of a team. Everyone has different levels of goals and making the state tournament might be it for some of these kids.
There are always going to be kids that don't make it that are better than some of the kids that do or backups on teams that just can't get the spot.
If you have ideas on how to make it better, write up a proposal and get it to coaches and then to the advisory members who met earlier this week.
