Quote from stevefrench on February 25, 2025, 3:51 pmGood afternoon,
I just want to say that I am bamboozled by the state tournament format and won't be attending because of it. I want to complain a little bit and then it can just be water under the fridge from here on out.
THREE DAYS?!?!?! Don't kids wrestle in 16 man brackets every weekend throughout the year in ONE day, on two MAYBE three mats? Now they will say Mr. French, "The brackets usually aren't full so it's just not the same." I would say, well, sometimes they are full and kids will get 5 matches in a day and that is more of a good thing than a bad thing. But, instead someone thought it was a genius idea to stretch this puppy out over THREE days and I can only assume those people would say, "Well, Mr French, we are getting two birds stoned at once by having the girls tournament and boys at the same venue on the same weekend." To that, I would say, good point. BUT THREE DAYS?!?! The kids who wrestle in the quarters on Thursday will have about a 24 hour break until the semis. If they win in the semis, figure in about another 24 hour break until they wrestle again. These kids are acclimated to wrestling sooner than that all year long all for it to be goofed with in the most important tournament of the year.
Now I am sure someone can give me some good reasons on why the decision was made to make it three days long, but it isn't rocket appliances to know the most assumed reason....the green stuff.....money. (Unless you are at the Denny where they say "Mr. French, cash is not king.")
So, long story made short here, I think it makes for a poor wrestler and fan experience to have such a stretched out state tournament. Please let me know your thoughts on this as I am not the only person in the world who thinks this is ridiculous.

Quote from Sasquatch on February 25, 2025, 5:46 pmI could see it when the dual tournament was at the same time, but now it's ridiculous. We have family coming, and when you have to travel from the east, it's 4 nights of motel rooms.
It's a long time between matches for the wrestlers and another day to make weight.

Quote from Cneville on February 26, 2025, 9:27 amNorth Dakota is of comparable size when it comes to the state tournaments...they have a girls division as well as A and B and their individual tournament is done in two days with their dual tournament being the third day. But, for now, it is what it is.

Adding the girls bracket does not signify having three days. There is zero reason tournament can’t star at 9 with girls first, then 11 for boys -they are separate tournaments boys would weigh in at 9 not 7 with girls-2 hour weigh in before tournament. It’s in their handbook 1 1/2-3 hours prior. With boys weighing in at 730 and not starting until roughly 1130 if girls take an hour and they don’t allow boys adequate time (30-45) minutes to warm up Like I said 2 separate tournaments. Girls on 8 mats will take roughly an hour.
SDHSAA can use some of the money they are making and rent out the civic center for prob next to nothing and have 3-4 mats in there and host weigh-in’s and warm ups for boys. Will still have time to clear the arena for second session to start at 5 and be done with wrestling on Friday at 8-9 pm. Saturday can be run the same. Heck you can do all wrestle backs in same session on 8 mats or better yet add a mat and each tournament (3 separate) gets 3 mats. With second day now only being 8 left in each weight class. Do consolation round then semis to showcase then wrest back. Everyone go out to eat and visit their favorite places and come back at 5 for placing matches followed by Finals.
Just one possible solution to build off of. The NCAA has the current format we use, but they are 65 man brackets not 16 or is some cases 13.
the SDHSAA needs to completely revamp its Shannon for wrestling. You can find it on their site. It is completely unprofessional with just adding revisions going back to at least 2018. They need to enlist the help of coaches, officials, tournament hosts, retired officials, retired coaches and fans that have been around for 20-30 years. If they would show they cared and not just say I wrestled so I care, they would truly show they are in it for the Student Athlete who they ultimately represent.

I figured as such. My question would be, how much longer would it make the days/ sessions by wrestling the one class of girls on all 8 mats if they tried doing it in two days again......for the sake of the wrestlers and fans? I will not bad mouth the girls program as I have a daughter who may wrestle some day with my full support, but chances are, you give them all 8 mats and the rounds last 30-50 minutes TOPS. Now they will say, "Mr French, they want the same experience as the boys get by being "featured" wrestling in the center mats for the semi-finals etc. etc." Well, lets look at the dreaded sport of pumpkin pushing. I do believe that the class B boys and class B girls are not at the same place or held at the same time. Same goes for the other classes. They all get their own "spotlight" to shine in. I think it is most probable to have the girls tourney and boys tourney at the same place during the same weekend but I think we ought to look at time management a little better. Fans travel for the state tournament to watch wrestling, not really to have an immense amount of free time that cost more than it ever has before. I've talked with numerous people who have said "Ya I am going to go out there for the Thursday and Friday sessions and the watch the final round at home." THATS NUTS TO ME. The best environment to wrestle in ever is when its relatively later in the evening (prime time), adult fans are POPPED, and the area is rocking(because everyone would stay for the final round that would be after the semis etc etc.). But now we will have the final round where the best matches should be with the least amount of fans( my prediction on attendance). Please don't come at me and say "Mr French, I think it outrageous that you have to mention that fans may be....greased.... at a high school event." Cmon man, it's going to happen one way or another (like the song). I would be curious to know how much MORE money is being spent by the fans on average and how much MORE money the places making money are making.

Quote from Armbar on February 26, 2025, 3:03 pmIt's obviously about $$. If they can stretch it out 3 days any lame excuse will work. Before the duals in ND they stretched it out 3 days also. And if you just won one match, you'd wrestle Friday.

Then SD has an even worse format than ND did. You win zero matches on Day 1 (lose first round) then your next match isn't until Day 2 (Friday morning). Unreal!

Need to ensure that mom and dad buy at least 1 night in a hotel, and 2 days of tickets! If kids are eliminated on day 1, that is less hotel and ticket money.

That's how ND did it even when they ran duals in with the individual. There's no way they're gonna let anyone get beat out day 1. Think HOTELS! $$
