Does that apply to all sports at every level? Just high school and college? Just high school? Or just high school wrestling in South Dakota? If your kid had a chance to go be part of a top program in any given sport anywhere in the country you wouldn’t take that opportunity. By your logic if you did do that any success your kid had wouldn’t matter because he wouldn’t be considered home grown.

Quote from Travis on April 15, 2025, 8:46 pmNo it doesn’t apply to sports at every level. Only Highschool. Colleges recruit, best programs have the best recruiting
so be proud of who you are canton great recruiters.. not a great program that builds its talent like its competitors. Unless you can tell me who else is doing this.
what other team in the state has ever imported as many athletes as canton had on the roster this year? you can even go out of the sport of wrestling…Not to mention they were the ones with success compared to homegrown talent.
Canton very successful at recruiting…

Quote from hwtguy on April 17, 2025, 8:27 amThe coaches in Canton are certainly doing a great job. They’ve built a strong program by actively encouraging offseason wrestling participation and promoting strength training. That kind of commitment is admirable and clearly pays off.
That being said, it's also worth noting that Canton seems to receive a significant number of transfer students from other areas. Additionally, it appears that some athletes are being held back a year before enrolling, which can provide a physical and competitive advantage.
Do I believe Canton has excellent coaching? Absolutely. But I also believe there are other factors at play beyond just coaching. Given South Dakota's open enrollment policies—which allow families to choose any school without consequence—this trend will likely continue unless those policies are revisited.

Kids getting held back a year or even two has been going on for years. That is not new and definitely doesn’t apply to just one sport or school. At the end of the day all the accusations of wrongdoing are unfounded. If the open enrollment policies are so lax then there is nothing stopping a group of top kids from all moving into the same program at a different school. Obviously there is something more than just wrestling drawing families in.
At the end of the day success breeds jealousy.

Quote from Travis on April 17, 2025, 4:32 pmWasn’t talking about kids ages at all. Just how they recruit already successful kids and call them their own.
If you call success recruiting versus developing… Then you are correct most successful program in the state…
if you look development throughout AAU progression into HS. Well then canton is definitely average to below average

I know you didn’t say anything about ages. I wasn’t replying to you. Keep up with the conversation. Not everything is about you

Lol well considering this forum is primarily for youth/high school wrestling in South Dakota, I would say that's where I was applying it.

Quote from McCook on April 23, 2025, 1:55 pmWell if you wanted to wait to hold back(redshirt) your 7 or 8th grader you most likely won't be able to do that anymore. SDHSAA is meeting today and tomorrow and that is a change in the policy that once enrolled as a 7th grader in any school you have pretty much 6 years to get your 6 years of eligibility in as a HS Athlete athlete. Used to be only 4 years for 9-12th now they are rewording it to cover your 7 and 8th grade years. Good move for the future of Wrestling!

People will just do it earlier then. Until there is an age out point it will never change.

Maybe it is. I would have to look. Change it to can’t turn 19 before a particular season starts.

You are correct. The day a kid turns 20 they are done competing in High School sports in South Dakota.

Quote from Travis on April 25, 2025, 7:26 pmI would like to see the numbers before entertaining of kids turning 19 before wrestling season…
so the argument parents holding kids back to turn them into some sort of super athlete isn’t even an issue as far as I have ever seen.
