Their coaches push them to be great. Check out their Facebook page. How many other coaches have the same expectations of themselves as they do their kids? How many other programs follow their kids after high school? How many other coaches train with their kids during the off season? How many other schools brought a student section to state? Hate on them all you want, but they do it for the right reasons or so ot seems from the outside looking it. My opinion, alot of other coaches and programs should take note.

all I am saying is not hard to win state eight years in a row when you miraculously pick up hammers…
all 6 champions from other programs and somehow strangely ended up in the same place. Now pull up winner Kimball Phillip parkston, bH…
between all of them, they don’t have six kids that didn’t start out in their AAU program.
my hat off to the canton kids they work hard. Granum 144 last year my kid wrestled him to 190 this year and he is jacked

Yeah, because Harrisburg, Tea Area, and Brandon Valley have horrible coaching staffs that can’t get the best out of their wrestlers…

Many coaches across the state are just as good as Cantons, and judging from this post and past experience, of better character!!
Like one of the coaches from out west used to say: I'd rather lose with my own kids than win with somebody elses!!

No doubt, some named have moved with their families to Canton. Over the years there have been so many kids that lived in other districts and somehow ended up wrestling for Canton. You have to forgive the rest of the state for lumping all the kids together. Why does the crowd boo Canton wrestlers at the state tournament? Is it jealousy? Nope, it’s the fact that everyone, for the past eight years, knows where these kids are from and how they all got to the same team. If Canton was like the rest of the Class B wrestling schools and built their own teams from the ground up, they would not have won 8 championships in a row.

Quote from WrestleMma185 on March 5, 2025, 8:33 amAll I see is a great group of coaches, a passionate fan base of parents and students, and a community and culture that greatly supports wrestling. It’s no surprise kids that may not feel properly supported want to go somewhere that will. Going to a new place from where you may be originally from does not automatically make you a better wrestler. This does not just happen at Canton. Plenty of other kids are bouncing around. Huge fan of the team and the people I have crossed paths with from that community.
Miss Evjen is a stud! Those girls sure seem to be having a great time together as a team and competing!

Canton’s coaches, parents, students, community, and culture are no better/no worse than numerous other wrestling towns across the state. The difference is that other towns spend 10-15 years developing their wrestlers to try and win that elusive state team championship, while Canton does it year after year with wrestlers from other programs/towns.
I for one have much more respect for Parkston winning 3 in a row with Parkston kids, than Canton winning 8 in a row with kids from everywhere.

Quote from The Champ on March 5, 2025, 8:27 pmThis years team would have still won without transfers. The only point that is valid in your straw man argument is Giedd and possibly Kendrick. Although Kendrick has been here for multiple years. Also, past 8 years have been all with transfers? Show me where? 80% or more of Canton’s points have been scored by homegrown talent. Looking back further than the most recent couple of years, 100% of the lineup grew up in Canton and still ran away with the title.
Also look at what Penn State is doing in college wrestling. Practice partners and coaches matter. Kids go to Penn State for the partners because the success you have can be greatly dependent on the people in the room pushing you to do 1% more. I’m sure the kids and coaches in Canton do not care what you have to say because they are working on getting better. Maybe you should work on getting 1% better and trying to get your community to support your wrestling program.

With this being said do not discredit what Canton has done with homegrown talent. They have been remarkable and kids have seen the success of homegrown talent and having a community behind them so they decided to join hoping to become the best version of themselves.

The Walkers’ started wrestling for Canton when? Let’s do the math. Minus-106, minus-113, minus-120, and minus-150 = 80.5 points. Still want to say Canton would have won?
Do you really want to go year by year? Ok, let’s start with last years team, which was pretty similar to this years except Aston Keller who started in Yankton and Ayson Rice, who never lived in Canton. Then 100% of the teams were from Canton? Andy Meyer - Harrisburg, Tanner Meyers - Tea Area.
Now you are comparing Canton to Penn State? I think Harrisburg and Tea Area have just as good or better coaches, and wrestling partners that would suffice. Ever heard of Tyler Woodring?

Never once did I compare Canton to Penn State. I simply just pointed out that people go where they have the best chance to succeed. (i.e. the best partners and the best coaches) Obviously these kids did not think that Harrisburg or Tea were the right fit. Those who you listed above were not just “plug” in to succeed. Some of those kids started in Canton in middle school. This is all forgetting to mention it is the kids choice to come here. They might have had friends that they grew up with at the school. Why wouldn’t you want to go to school with your best friends?
Why did Hunter Richmond get 8th place last year at state and won it this year? Development. It is simple. Work hard and surround yourself with likeminded people. Stop hating on high school kids and maybe work on yourself.
Additionally, to the start of your reply, the Walker brothers father is a coach. If your father moved jobs you wouldn’t follow?

Thank you. Booing does not belong in high school sports in SD. As we know there can be some cocky wrestlers all over the world. Just look at NCAA. Kids deserve to celebrate, and there is a certain line in which it becomes excessive, but that is for the coach to work on. These are all learning lessons for these kids. We put our kids in this sport to hope they learn a great life lesson and become a better man/woman. Instead of putting down kids let’s cheer them on and pick them up when they are done. You also have no idea what these kids are going through so just be there to support them and cheer them on, or don’t say anything at all!

You sir, are very much confused. I am in no way blaming kids for this situation. This is 100% caused by adults. If adults wouldn’t contact area wrestlers, take them out to eat, tell them how well they would fit into the program, how much the town loves wrestling, and how much more success they will have there, this would not be an issue at all. Just to fill holes in a lineup to keep the streak going.
Like I said in an earlier post anyone can add assistant coaches to your staff. Is the Walker’s father a teacher in the Canton School District, or did the move just for the assistant coaching position?

As to the coaching situation, I believe that the school district would hire the best available coach and if there is an interest from a current staff member they would be able to fill the position. I am not a part of the school district so I do not know.
All together, why don’t you spend your energy elsewhere by promoting the sport of wrestling. This sport need a lot of growth and we will never be able to promote the sport by putting others down. Take your extra energy you are using on this and try to grow the sport in your community. Finally, take the negative energy you have towards anyone and shove it. Nobody gets better by giving negative energy.

You sir, are very much confused. I am in no way blaming kids for this situation. This is 100% caused by adults. If adults wouldn’t contact area wrestlers, take them out to eat, tell them how well they would fit into the program, how much the town loves wrestling, and how much more success they will have there, this would not be an issue at all. Just to fill holes in a lineup to keep the streak going.
